Story

Dear Supporters,

As you are aware, since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in Ukraine, our "Support Kharkiv Foundation" has forged a close partnership with the Charitable Foundation "Kharkiv with You," based in Kharkiv. Together, we have jointly sponsored numerous rehabilitation camps for children, offered medical assistance to kids in need, facilitated transportation abroad for essential treatments, and most recently, contributed to financing life-saving surgeries.

Our esteemed partners at the Charitable Foundation "Kharkiv with You" recently commemorated a decade of unwavering dedication to supporting medical institutions in Kharkiv and the surrounding areas. Here is the information from their press release:

‘In a remarkable expansion of its efforts, the foundation has initiated a new direction of assistance in collaboration with medical professionals. Since February 2024, the foundation, with the support of generous donors and the advocacy of GéNIA and her dedicated supporters, has embarked on a mission to introduce interventional neurology into the lives of civilians in Kharkiv. The primary objective is to establish a modern stroke service and offer aid for injuries to the vessels of the neck and head.

As part of this initiative, the foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to procure medical equipment for interventional neuroradiologists. The foundation is proud to partner with the Incubator of Multidisciplinary Teams, operating at the University Clinic of the Kharkiv National Medical University.

The impact of these efforts is already evident, with five lives saved thus far. Patients, previously bedridden due to strokes or severe wounds, are now experiencing remarkable recoveries and reclaiming their independence. This success underscores the dedication of the medical professionals at the Slobozhan Medical Institution, who tirelessly pursue the latest treatments and technologies.

However, the journey is far from over. With state funding yet to cover the acquisition of necessary equipment and materials for these innovative procedures, the foundation continues to rely on the support of generous donors and compassionate individuals’.  Please read more about the details of the surgeries and campaign in the post below.

Your assistance, no matter how big or small, would be immensely appreciated. Simply spreading the word about our campaign can make a significant difference. It's heartening to know that these surgeries have a direct impact on saving lives. Your support will be wholeheartedly cherished.

With gratitude and warm regards,

GéNIA

Updates

As you're aware, since the beginning of 2024, the attacks on Ukraine have intensified, particularly targeting civilians of Kharkiv and its surrounding regions, whilst earlier this year, we've witnessed several successful surgeries that have offered glimmers of hope amidst these challenging times:

1. Stenting of the left internal carotid artery in a patient on the 5th day of ischemic stroke.

2. Emergency thrombectomy from the right middle cerebral artery in a patient with ischemic stroke.

3. Stenting of the left coronary artery in a patient with subtotal stenosis.

4. Stenting of the left internal carotid artery in a patient with posttraumatic dissection injury.

The outcomes of these surgeries have instilled hope for full recovery in many other patients. Through the utilisation of thrombolytic therapy and interventional neuroradiology, disability and mortality rates have been reduced by 70% and 40% respectively, offering promising prospects for those in need.

The approximate cost of each operation is £1,200, with a monthly requirement of 4 to 5 surgeries. Therefore, between April and January, we need to secure approximately £54,000 to continue our life-saving efforts. While we've successfully raised £5,000, we still require an additional £49,000 to meet our target.

We deeply value any support you can offer, whether it's big or small. If you feel compelled to contribute to this noble cause, we will greatly appreciate it!

With gratitude,

GéNIA and the "Support Kharkiv Foundation" Team

Supporting

KHARKIV FOUNDATION from Support Kharkiv Foundation

'Support Kharkiv Foundation’ has been created by the London - based concert pianist and composer GéNIA, who was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, to support the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and its citizens, as the city has undergone destruction on a huge scale during the war in Ukraine. It is a micro-trust in aid of ‘GivingWorks’, a charity registered in England and Wales (charity registration no.1078770).

Whilst many big international charities provide support across the Ukraine, I feel that there is a need for localised help, on a simple, practical level. Since the beginning of the war in the Ukraine (24 February 2022), Kharkiv has come under heavy bombing (as it is positioned to the East of the country where the Russian army is now gathering their forces).

Apart from regular rocket attacks, a number of mines have been scattered on the streets in residential areas, which has made it dangerous to walk outside. Many civilians have been injured (and some, sadly, killed). There has not been a single day without the city being bombarded since the first day of war.

Therefore I have teamed up with a local charity ‘Kharkiv with You’ БФ "Харків з тобою" to help its citizens directly.

Kharkiv is a city which gave birth to, and educated many of the world’s most renowned musicians, artists, scientists, doctors, and other professionals. It was one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine. Kharkiv has contributed vastly to the world, and now it is time for us to give back to it.
